A few of us went down to the beach and started a fire, right at the edge of the water where the buzz of the waves drowned out the crickets. The fire was a nice flickering thing that ate away at the night sky for a few hours. It was an idle, pensive kind of night, a slow cool evening that took me out of time. For a few moments I fell out of the scene and reflected on whether this was a good use of our time. These kinds of carefree experiences were for your 20s. Weren’t they?

In my 20s I sat around campfires or hiked in the woods with friends, flinging twigs into the bushes, thinking: is this a good use of my time? I should be applying for scholarships and studying for exams!
