The new skyscraper downtown is a unique behemoth. The Wilshire Grand Center. I’m looking at it right now. It’s cutting into the white sky like a blunted skewer and carves out its own faded shape amongst the colossal steely garden. Lots of adjectives there to describe a building. Just another building. But it’s the only one that doesn’t have a flat roof and so it stands out, adds some character, especially at night when everything glitters through the heavy atmosphere like a Simon Stålenhag cityscape. Everyone I’ve talked to agrees it is a graceful addition to the Los Angeles skyline but I wonder how many people know during the final stages of its construction somebody leapt off the 53rd floor onto the street below.
