The little robot on top of the fridge stared down at the larger robot on top of the kitchen table. It beeped and BEEPED as it sucked up particles of dust and dirt. Other robots patrolled the kitchen in a cleaning cycle, programmed to keep the house clean clean clean. The top of the fridge was an easy job: just keep this rectangle dust-free. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. The kitchen table was an intermediate job: keep it clean WHEN nobody was eating there. This wasn’t a problem today. The hardest job was reserved for three industrial-sized robots. They patrolled the non-standard floor and kept every square inch

These robots thought only in terms of 24 hour cycles and were not capable of stringing together longer segments of time, or they would have stopped their tasks long ago. The house had been abandoned for 25 years.
