Merida, MX
A trip out of the US is a good way to start a new year and spend my birthday, even if getting there was mostly horrendous and inconvenient. After we pulled out of Mexico City though getting into Merida was just fine. We spent time in the city, swam in cenotes, walked around cool Spanish neighborhoods and tried to get by without knowing much of the language, which was not so hard if at least awkward. I enjoyed the small beach town of Sisal and the live music that filled some of the bustling restaurants and bars. At night Merida closed down and its back streets transform into haunted half-lit alleys. We stuck to the main roads when were still out after nightfall.
